James Merlino, Minister for Sport, Recreation and Youth AffairsJames Merlino is the Minister for Sport, Recreation and Youth Affairs. He attended high school in Lilydale, graduating from Mt. Lilydale Mercy College in 1990. From there he went on to study Arts at the University of Melbourne, graduating with Honours in 1996.

James has held many jobs, including work as a part-time bricklayer's labourer during university and as an Industrial Officer with the Shop Assistants Union. The retail industry is the biggest employer of young people, and during his time with the Union James saw first-hand the issues facing young people in the workplace.

James’s political career began in earnest when he was elected as a Councillor in the Shire of Yarra Ranges in 1997. He was re-elected in 2000 and went on to become Deputy Mayor in 2001/2002.

James moved from Local to State government in 2002 when he was elected to the Legislative Assembly as the Member for Monbulk. He was re-elected in 2006 and took on the role of Minister for Sport, Recreation and Youth Affairs.

James is a keen fan of Australian Rules football and is a keen supporter of many teams, including Hawthorn Football Club, Silvan Football Club and Montrose Football Club. Fortunately these teams all play in different leagues, so he never has to favour one over the other!
