What Are the Benefits of an Apprenticeship or Traineeship?

An apprenticeship or traineeship is a great stepping stone into a career. As an apprentice or trainee, you get the following benefits:

  • You’re paid to work and study
  • It provides a pathway from school to work, or from one industry to another
  • Certificate II, III and IV qualifications are recognised anywhere in Australia
  • Formal training from a TAFE or private training provider is combined with workplace-based training
  • You have the same rights as employees
  • You can get involved in competitions and awards

You Get Paid to Study

As an apprentice or trainee, you get to earn while you learn. You might also be eligible for financial assistance from the government while you train. Find out more in the Financial Assistance section.

It's Flexible

An apprenticeship or traineeship is your chance to do paid work and get trained so you end up with a nationally recognised qualification. That means you could work anywhere in Australia. In fact, you'll learn skills you can use anywhere in the world.

Most apprenticeships or traineeships can be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis and are fairly flexible in their set-up.

You'll Get Great Training

Apprentices and trainees learn industry skills through a combination of on-the-job paid work, and study at a TAFE or another registered training provider. You get to put what you learn into practice on the job. After your training, you’ll get a qualification at Certificate II, III, IV or Diploma level.

You've Got the Same Rights as All Workers

Apprentices and trainees have the same rights as all employees. If you have any concerns about your contract or what’s happening in your workplace, there are organisations that can help. Find out more in the Apprentice and trainee rights section.

You Can Enter Competitions and Win Awards
