Government assistance
Local Government
Start with your local government (new window) office and ask if there are services or programs offered in your area to help with starting or growing a business. Ask to speak to the council's Economic or Business Development Officers.
Victorian Government
The Business Victoria website (new window) provides information to help you start, run and grow your business.
Business Victoria runs a series of workshops called Under New Management (new window) that can provide invaluable assistance if you are looking to:

- Buy a franchise
- Sign a retail lease
Federal Government
The Federal Government provides the Business Entry Point (new window) site which helps you determine how you need to deal with federal, state and local government organisations.
The Australian Taxation Office (new window) site provides information for business operators with tax and tax law issues.
The federal Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources publish an online guide covering legal issues for small business (new window).
If you're currently getting Centrelink payments, you might be eligible for the New Enterprise Initiative Scheme (NEIS) (new window). This is a free program that can help you kick-start your business idea by:
- Providing small business training
- Developing your business plan
- Providing ongoing financial support for the first twelve months of your business operation (if your business plan is assessed as viable)

Business Enterprise Centres (BECs) (new window) are community based, not-for-profit organisations that make government and private sector resources available to anyone thinking of starting a business or currently running a business.
BECs help with a range of advice and support for businesses:
- Developing a business plan
- Helping with decisions
- Business referrals and networks
- Business mentoring
- Workshops and training programs
BECs are located in metropolitan and regional areas throughout Victoria.
