Victoriaworks Case Study: Angeline
Name: Angeline
Age: 22
Victoriaworks traineeship: Receptionist
Employer: Corangamite Catchment Management Authority
Location: Colac
AFTER three years at home caring for her young son, Angeline decided to go back into the workforce.
It was a big step for Angeline to put Jayce, 4, into daycare and commence full-time employment.
But once she had made the decision, the perfect job appeared.
Angeline is 22 and lives in Colac. She was not able to finish her secondary schooling but she has completed some training with Colac Adult and Community Education.
Once she decided to go back to work it only took her a month to land a Youth Employment Scheme position.
Angeline started her Victoriaworks traineeship in February 2004 when she secured a position as a receptionist at the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority in Colac. After completing the Victoriaworks traineeship she was employed in the role on a more permanent basis.
Angeline's manager Allan Bassett said Angeline stood out during interviews as a person with the skill to complete the traineeship.
"And more importantly had the enthusiasm to go ahead with it," he said.
The Corangamite Catchment Management Authority protects and restores land and water resources, encourages the sustainable development of natural resource-based industries and conserves and the region's natural and cultural heritage.
Angeline's duties include distributing and posting mail, answering telephone calls, greeting customers at reception, maintaining the filing system and library and providing executive support to the corporate manager.
Angeline said the job had boosted her confidence. She learnt leadership skills, developed her computer literacy and become comfortable using her initiative.
"I think that if I hadn't been offered this traineeship that I wouldn't be where I am today, and it would take a longer amount of time to get where I plan to be in life," she said.
Angeline said she enjoyed getting out of the house and working and meeting people.
She encouraged young people considering Victoriaworks to "go for it".
