Time is to be valued
Guest author Marlia de Fatima writes about her experience coming to Melbourne from East Timor to train with the Victorian Government, including spending time with the youthcentral team.
As a 24-year-old Timor Leste trainee with the Victorian Government in the Corporate Communications Unit I have learnt many things over the past few weeks. But the main thing that I will take away from my experience in Melbourne is that time is to be valued.
Before coming to Australia I did not realise how much time was wasted.
There are many differences between Dili and Melbourne - the weather being only one thing! Not to mention the language, food and transport. Within the work environment I have seen how focused and willing to help Victorian Government workers are.
On a personal note it was difficult being away from my family - I have a one-year-old who I missed terribly. That said, I have been determined not to let this be an obstacle for my learning - sometimes it seems I am learning something new every second!
Indeed the spirit of learning has been reignited in me. It has also challenged me to change the way I do things. And I want to now encourage my countrymen to move towards a positive change too. I also want to encourage young people to never be embarrassed to ask a question, no matter how old you are.
There are many facilities and opportunities for learning in Australia. I really hope young people here make full use of these and do not take them for granted.
When I return to Timor it is my hope to share my learnings. I now have increased knowledge in design, media and writing. I’ve also learnt the benefits of sharing ideas to bring about an even greater good.
This time has been an investment in my skills and talents. The investment will not only benefit me going forward but also my department and my beloved country. My hope is to keep on learning as well as sharing my knowledge, and of course valuing the precious time I have.
