New Moon
Stephanie Meyer
(Little, Brown Book Group)
If you are one of the few people that have not read the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer, then I highly recommend that you begin now.
As the sequel to Twilight, New Moon follows the love story and complicated life of Bella Swan and her vampire love interest, Edward Cullen.
Although Meyer continues writing from Bella's point of view, New Moon lacks the same intense descriptions that Twilight contains. Even though it is more informative rather than descriptive, New Moon contains just as much passion, emotion and adventure.
For all the Edward Cullen fans out there, do not be discouraged by his absence for a significant part of the novel. It is Edward's lack of presence that sets up the storyline of Bella Swan and her complex life.
The repercussion of Edward abandoning Bella is what New Moon is primarily about. In saying that, Meyer has captured the correct emotion and pain required in order for the reader to connect so closely with Bella's character.
The reader feels Bella's pain and joins her for her slow recovery back into a somewhat normal routine. This leads Bella to bond closer with Jacob and of course gives her more difficult decisions - whether to move on from Edward or keep hoping that he will return.
Not only are there changes in the style of writing by Meyer, there are also changes to the town of Forks, with new characters being introduced and dark events happening.
With Victoria and Laurent returning to Forks and werewolves in the forest, Bella is fearful again for her future and strives to get Edward to come back to her, doing whatever it takes, even if it means sacrificing her life.
Although at times New Moon is predictable, it delivers further insight into Bella's relationship with Jacob, vampires, and Edward in particular.
New Moon engages the reader with intense drama and edge of your seat situations. With werewolves an exciting addition to the plot, Meyer has left enough clues and suspense to leave the reader wanting more.
4 out of 5.
