Webcomic Reviews - Part 5

I’ve got some interesting things for you all this time. Whether you’re into good art, an entirely different perspective on an old favourite, or just a cute little something that makes you appreciate the world around you, I have it all. So, once more, get ready to become glued to your computer screen because it’s webcomics time!

Garfield Minus Garfield

This is an extremely popular comic by Dan Walsh, and chances are you’ve probably heard about it at some point or another. But if you haven’t, let me tell you about it.

At the very least we all know about Garfield, right? Everyone’s favourite lazy, orange, lasagne-loving cat with a serious attitude problem. Well, what if we took Garfield out of those comic strips and just left his owner, Jon Arbuckle? You would get a hilarious and sometimes a bit sad comic.

Dan takes already existing Garfield strips with Jon and Garfield, and simply removes Garfield, leaving Jon looking a bit crazy, talking to himself or just doing totally bizarre things. Although, as I said, it can make him look a bit depressing at times.

There’s even a book available, with a few strips actually drawn by Garfield creator Jim Davis, so that’s got to tell you a few good things.

Garfield Minus Garfield is a good way to waste an afternoon, and it usually updates a few times a week, so you can get a regular fix.

Romantically Apocalyptic

This is a very interesting, unique comic. The author, Vitaly S. Alexius, uses actors and props to take photographs, then puts them into Photoshop to digitally paint his comics, which he does with amazing detail. It’s definitely one of the most detailed webcomics you will ever see.

Romantically Apocalyptic is set in the distant future, after an apocalypse caused by a nuclear explosion. Humanity has been almost entirely wiped out, save for a man who calls himself ‘Captain’, and his two friends/team members, Sniper and Pilot. The comic follows their adventures in the wasteland and their discovery of how the apocalypse happened, what caused it, and what they’re supposed to do next.

Romantically Apocalyptic mixes humour and action very well, with zany adventures and creepy monsters roaming around. The story can be a bit difficult to follow, though, as it requires you to do a bit of extra reading through the text logs on the website.

This is one of the most beautiful, interesting comics you will ever read. Once you start, you’ll just want to keep reading and be on the edge of your seat until the next episode, with updates on Wednesdays and Saturdays. If English isn’t your first language, the comic has also been translated to a range of other languages.

StupidFox

The world is a pretty complicated place sometimes. There’s a lot of things that are hard to understand. But what if we took a look at the world through the eyes of a very simple-minded fox and his friends? Emily Y. Chan decides to answer this question with her cute, quirky webcomic.

Meet StupidFox. As the name implies, he is a very, very stupid fox. Each comic follows his adventures, trying to understand the world or even just doing day-to-day things, in the way only a very dim-witted fox can.

StupidFox has a real simplicity and gets its message across with only images, no text, which just adds to its charm. There’s no real plot, no drama, just a silly fox doing a lot of silly, cute things.

It’s simple, yes, but it’s also brilliant. It’ll make you appreciate complicated situations and the world around us that little bit more.
