Okay, so you've decided that you're going to be a student. You might even have an idea of what you want to study. But how do you find out about that course of study? And what if there are options that you weren't even aware of? Here's some tips on how to get the most out of choosing a course.
Finding out about courses
You can start your research with the MyFuture Courses & Programs Search (new window). You can search for course info by using a job name, or refine your search based on the type of course you're looking for.
Vocational Education and Training (VE&T) is the type of training you can do at TAFE, other training organisations, schools and community centres. There are thousands of courses you can do covering virtually every job or career path.
Find out more about VE&T on the Skills Victoria website (new window), with info about study, courses, apprenticeships and traineeships.
Applying for courses
If you've just finished year 12 and are looking to go on to further study or training, VTAC (new window) has heaps of information. If you have questions about the application process of a course you're interested in, you should contact the admissions department of the university or TAFE you're interested in going to.
www.tafe.vic.gov.au (new window) has a list of contact details for Victorian TAFE institutes, and the Australian Education Network (new window) has a list of contact details for Australian universities.
For most courses you'll need to make an application through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) (new window). The VTAC site has heaps of info about finding and applying for courses.
If you're returning to study as a mature age student ask the admissions department of the university or TAFE you're interested in (new window) about the application process.
