how to apply for a courseHow you apply for a course will depend on where you are planning to study it. Lots of applications can now be made online but you may need to provide a written application for some courses.

Remember that filling out a form could be the first of many steps in the application process. For example, some courses also require prospective students to sit an entrance exam or to present a folio of their work.

University or TAFE

To enrol in a university or TAFE course in Victoria grab a copy of the VTAC Guide (on sale in newsagents in July/August each year) or go to the VTAC website (new window).

To apply for a course interstate you’ll have to contact the relevant tertiary admissions or qualifications organisation in that state or territory. You’ll find a list of links to higher education providers all over Australia on the Going to Uni website (new window) - just click on the state you're interested in and find the uni, TAFE or independent tertiary college in the right-hand list.

Short courses

Start your search for a short course at the Short Courses Victoria website (new window). You can create an account and save your preferences for courses and venues.

Short Courses Victoria also lists contact details for each course so you can get in touch with the course provider for details on how to apply.

Australian Defence Force

To study with the Australian Defence Force you’ll need to join the Army, Navy or Air Force. Go to the My HQ website (new window) to create an account and make an online application.

Make sure you understand the commitment you’ll be making to military service before you apply.

Apprenticeships or Traineeships

To apply for an apprenticeship or traineeship you’ll need to find an employer who will take you on. You can also sign up with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

Distance education

To enrol in distance education at primary or secondary school level go to the Distance Education Victoria website (new window).

You can enrol online for courses with Open Universities Australia - just go to their website (new window). You can also call 1300 36 36 52 and enrol over the phone or ask for a copy of the enrolment form to be sent to you.

To enrol in a TAFE course by distance education, visit the TAFE Virtual Campus (new window).

Don’t be late!

Make sure you enrol in your course before the cut-off date or you might miss out on a place! While some courses do allow late applications they usually charge a fee.

Make sure you take note of any extra requirements and their due dates e.g. if you need to sit an entrance exam. See VTAC’s Entrance requirements page (new window) for more info on this.

And it doesn’t hurt to double-check your application form before you submit it - just to be sure you’ve filled it all out correctly.
