VE&T - Music industry project

Vocational Education & TrainingIf you’re not all that excited by the VCE subjects on offer there are more than 20 Vocational Education &Training (VE&T) courses you can enrol in that will count towards your VCE or VCAL.

Sandringham College, in partnership with Youth Connect, offers VE&T Certificate II and III in Music Industry as part of its VCE program. Both Sandringham College students and students from other schools can enrol in this course.

Emily, 19, and Anita, 18, recently completed their Certificate III in Music Industry at Sandringham College. Emily now has plans to start her own business taking music to schools and Anita is building her portfolio in music and film production.

What is the Music Industry Project?

The Music Industry Adopt A School Project is run by Youth Connect and Sandringham College Senior Campus. It has three parts: the Careers in Music Expo, Feedback music festival and student music industry workshops.

As part of Certificate II in Music Industry Youth Connect helps each student to find a work placement. Anita learned ‘so much’ from Ron when she worked at Ron Leigh’s Music Factory in Highett. Emily worked with Melodic Music in Prahran and scored a part-time job at the end of her placement.

Careers in Music Expo

Certificate II students set up the Careers in Music Expo and more than 30 organisations took part. Exhibitors included TAFEs, universities, private training providers, song-writing and copyright associations, music schools, instrument makers, stage and rigging suppliers, sound producers, film and music video producers, record labels and artist management firms.

The expo gave students a chance to learn more about the many jobs and career opportunities available in the music industry – that is, it’s not just about performing, there’s a lot more going on behind the scenes

Feedback - live music festival fundraiser

So many people turned up to the 2007 Feedback music festival) a student-run event to raise funds for World Vision) that the food and drink ran out within the first half-hour! An audience of more than 250 came to hear bands like The Gingers, Showcard and Evelyn Close.

Going on Tour

Music Industry students teamed up with Music Solo Performance and Music Group Performance students to put on shows in Swan Hill, Broken Hill, Menindee and Mildura. The tour was managed by students and featured student performers, sound technicians, video crew, photographer and journalist.

Anita says she’d ‘like to repeat’ Year 12 just so she could go on tour again and Emily adds that ‘she’s small enough to fit under the bus’ if she wants to tag along.
