The benefits of career expos

The benefits of career exposAs a year twelve student, I know how daunting the process of figuring out what you want to do, finding out how to do it and making all those life-changing decisions can be. Too often the VTAC process can seem overwhelming to students - especially when you have no idea what you’re going to do when you finish your VCE.

Heading to a careers expo is one of the best ways to make things that much easier for you. With just over two hundred stalls, with everything from possibilities for your gap year, universities, employment providers and TAFE institutes, you are bound to find some peace of mind.

Find out more about that course or job

For those who know exactly what they want to do, it is an opportunity to go and talk to the University, TAFE or employment provider representatives directly and ask all those questions that have been building up. Questions like:

  • What types of jobs can I expect to get with this qualification?
  • What is the on-campus accommodation really like?
  • What support services do you offer?

You can find out about open days, application processes and coursework. It's the perfect opportunity to look at the different courses offered by each education provider and compare them to decide what suits your particular career direction.

But I don't know what I want to do!

However, careers expos aren’t just for those who know what they want to do. There are over two hundred stalls at the Melbourne Herald Sun Career Expo, for example. If you're somebody who literally has no clue about whether to go to uni, go to TAFE, work or take a gap year this is a great place to start figuring out your answer.

There are so many different exhibitors that there is bound to be something that will strike your eye and maybe even lead you toward your future career path.

On top of this, a careers expo isn’t just for students. Careers advisors can develop useful links or find new information or people who aren’t completing studies can come to find out how they could be or what they could be doing instead.

How to find a career expo near you

Two of the main careers expos in Victoria are the Herald Sun Career Expo (new window) and The Age VCE and Careers Expo (new window), but they're not the only ones in town.

Local councils, universities and TAFEs, and industry organisations also host and run career expos, so keeping an eye and an ear out for one in your local area is a good idea. Have a chat to your careers teacher to see if they know of any expos that are coming to your part of the world.

Careers expos are a great opportunity to find out more about the choices that are waiting for you. If you haven’t been to one yet, I strongly recommend that you do.
