Emily Harris - National Youth Week Design Competition Winner

Emily Harris and her winning design. When Emily Harris picked up a promotional postcard in a cafe, she didn't know that it would lead to her winning a national design competition.

The postcard outlined details for a competition being run to create a "fresh new look" for National Youth Week 2008. Being a graphic designer, it appealed immediately to Emily's sense of creativity and she began putting together a design. She brainstormed, played around on her computer, and worked on it for a couple of months before submitting it to be judged.

When she found out that she'd won, Emily says she was "so happy, it was awesome". Her work in graphic design means that she spends her days putting together artistic projects, but she relished the opportunity for creativity that the National Youth Week Design Competition promised, saying that it was an exciting "opportunity to express your own form of design".

Emily's Design Background

After finishing high school in Wagga Wagga, Emily went on to study a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design at Charles Sturt University. She has been working for Melbourne design firm House Mouse since mid-2007, but says that the industry is tough to break into because it is so competitive.

Her persistence clearly paid off, though, as she describes her work at House Mouse as "everything I wanted to get out of graphic design", and her advice to prospective graphic designers is to "stick with it" if it is their dream.

The Design

Emily's design is focussed upon the slogan "Shout. Share. Live. Unite.", which was selected by the Young Members of the 2007 NYW National Planning Group to be the theme for 2008's National Youth Week. Her fun pink, blue, white and black creation will be used on promotional material, including websites and posters, to publicise NYW 2008.

National Youth Week

National Youth Week is "Australia's largest celebration of young people". It is designed to get today's youth active and involved in their society. Events are run every year throughout Australia, including competitions, forums and online polls. National Youth Week 2008 will be held from 5-13 April.
