Ged Reeves - Emo is not a dirty word
Wodonga muso Ged Reeves spoke to the people at Wodonga Youth Services about the world of emo. Here's how the conversation turned out.
Do you consider yourself to be an emo?
Most of my mates call me an emo, so I guess. I do love the music, so I would assume that makes me an emo.
What is your favourite emo look?
I would have to say the band T-shirt. Nothing points out emo like a kid walking down the street with an Underoath or Silverstein shirt.
What is your favourite emo music?
Well, I enjoy the softer type of emo such as Mayday Parade or The Starting Line. But I probably listen to a lot more screamo like Silverstein, Alesana, From First To Last and Senses Fail.
Do many of your friends enjoy the same music?
Most of my friends like the softer stuff, I'm always making them CDs with all my more acoustic emo stuff.
Why do you think the emo genre has taken off?
Personally, I love the emo genre because of the lyrics involved in the music, but I think it has taken off because it is a statement of not only style, but a change of attitude and emotion.
Do you think the emo craze will be around for a long time or short time (please explain why)?
I think emo, like other styles in the past such as punks, hippies and rockers will last a few more years, but as soon as the new fashion statement comes in, there is going to be a lot less emos around.
Do you think all the people who consider themselves emo really are or are just following the crowd (especially the ones who dress in all the black and make-up)?
The emo stereotype as we know it is the depressed, black-dressed kids who hate everything about life. But seriously, emo is about the music. So to all those kids who think they are emo because they are depressed and they think that their life couldn't get any worse, you're just like every other teenager who has felt depressed at some stage. So I would have to say, most of the kids these days are just following the crowd.
