National Youth Week 2009 - Aussie Assault

Friday 3 April 2009, Geelong Trades Hall

ShefuzzAs part of National Youth Week, on Friday 3 April 2009, the local Geelong public radio station 94.7 The Pulse (new window) held a music night underneath the Geelong Trades Hall.

Billed as a 6-10pm show featuring bands from Geelong and the surrounding district, the amount of talent was sure not to disappoint. The MCs for the evening were Ash and Ben from the radio show Aussie Assault, which showcases Australian music on a Friday night from 6-8pm.

After talking with the organisers of the night, I found out that they were hoping to hold the gig at a local pub, but instead chose Trades Hall. This was fortunate because it then made it an all ages event.

The bands featured on the night included Drive By Epic, Radio Star, She Fuzz, Andy Bear and the Bum Chums and Ryan McGill.

The best music by far was provided by She Fuzz, a four piece indie pop rock group hailing from Geelong and Melbourne. She Fuzz impressed the small crowd with their mix of rock-reggae feelgood tunes and showed that they definitely have a big future ahead of them.

During the break between bands interviews were held with providers of youth support services from various organisations in Geelong. This was an excellent way of showcasing what is available to the demographic that would be interested in this radio program.

Thought for next time: when planning a gig like this, sourcing out another more accessible venue would have been a good idea, as I really had to search through alleyways to find this place!
