R.E.G. FM - Radio East Gippsland

R.E.G. FM - Radio East GippslandRadio East Gippsland, more commonly known as R.E.G. FM, is designed for the mature residents of East Gippsland. Started over 20 years ago, the station is aimed at the age group of 45 and up. R.E.G utilises the help of many volunteers to keep the station running from 6am through to 10pm most nights.

What's that noise?

Alan Clemet is the first to admit that "the music on R.E.G FM is not for everyone (hence the target audience)". The music consists mainly of country and everything made before the '90s, but if you are a bit of a night owl you can hear some variety.

The regular program schedule is run from 6am to 6pm on weekdays, but after 6pm it is a free for all. Programs with names like Chaos, Swing Time, A Bit of This & That and The Young Ones are aimed at an assortment of age groups and musical preferences.

John Hennesy - drummer turned disc jockey

John Hennesy is a local Paynesvillian who presents Swing Time on Monday nights from 8 'til 9. Before volunteering for R.E.G. FM, John was an avid drummer and lived in the bustling suburb of Richmond. "Living in a place like that for too long can do bad things to you," he says.

When I asked John what attracted him to the broadcasting scene he said simply with a smirk on his face "It would have to be the assured 1000's of fans, fame and fortune." Swing Time features John's favourite type of music: swing.

Artists such as Nat King Cole, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Buddy Rich make regular appearances, while John's drummer jokes keep the audience laughing.

"How many drummers does it take to screw in a light bulb? One. He drums until someone turns on a light to tell him to stop that racket."

Well, maybe not laughing - maybe just smiling.

How can I get involved?

R.E.G is open to all members of the community of any age group and skill level. They have two broadcasting locations, one being in Lakes Entrance, and the other in Bairnsdale. If you would like to get involved, either behind the scenes or announcing, you just have to contact the station manager Alan Clemet, on 5152 6255.
