Things to do in Eastern MelbourneRoving Reporter Dayna has opened the secret portal through which to find things to do in Melbourne's east.

So you're sitting there, browsing through the chaotic world of internet randomness with your eyes almost fizzled into your head and you think to yourself, I wonder what's happening out in the real world. You think about it, but console yourself almost instantly with the thought that nothing ever happens out in the East.

Well, today may just be your lucky day, for you have found the secret portal through which to find the latest events and things to do around the Eastern metropolitan area. Whether you're a lover of the natural things or a music connoisseur, there is sure to be something that tickles your fancy out this neck of the woods.

Gigs

There are plenty of places around Eastern Melbourne that you can check out if you're the type that likes to experience music live and in person.

Ruby's

If you love original, eclectic beats ranging through from metal and blues to hip-hop and even ABBA imitators, then Ruby's (new window) is the place to go.

Ruby's, situated in Weirdsville, Belgrave, is said to be an oasis in a desert of bogans. And it is not just a pub. It's a band venue, bar, club, lounge, retreat, storeroom for lost shoes and a library.

Ruby's has become the local name in showcasing some of the biggest names in music. From Killing Heidi and Butterfingers to Bodyjar and Pete Murray, Ruby's definitely holds the showcase title for best original acts.

Rock the Hill

If you live within the Nillumbik Shire, than this one is sure to get you moving. Rock The Hill Productions (new window) is a non-profit organisation situated out in Panton Hill.

They hold events and gigs for young people and showcase new young and exciting talents. Holding gigs regularly, they are known for their fantastic atmosphere and low, low prices. If you hold a Nillumbik youth card (nypd) then gigs are free!

If you have a problem with transport, then no worries! Rock The Hill run a FREE shuttle bus from Hurstbridge station to Panton Hill and then back again after the gig.

EV's

EV's youth centre (new window) hosts events and live music by young people for young people. Not only do they hold gigs and events, they offer a wide range of services to youth in the Maroondah city area and beyond.

Dedicated to maintaining a friendly and relaxed ambience, EV's Youth Centre also opens for a drop-in program. If you're bored on a Friday, then drop in at EV's from 3.30pm til 5.30pm to meet new people, have a friendly game of pool or, for the video-game junkies, battle it out on the XBOX.

EV's caters for all needs, from contacts with social workers to the infamous Battle of the Bands.

Shopping

If shopping is more your flavour, than you need not worry because the East is well-known for its wide range of eclectic markets and stalls.

Camberwell Market

Are you a bargain hunter? Love to own vintage clothes and accessories that nobody else has? Then Rotary's Camberwell Market (new window) is the place to go! Open on Sundays, the market is packed with goodies to tantalize anyone's flavours. Situated in the city of Boroondara, there are over 300 stalls, each with items to rival any op-shop.

St Andrews Market

If you want to save the earth and do your bit for fresh, organically grown produce, then St Andrews Market (new window) is it! An attractor for hippies (genuine or not), there are 140 stalls with organically grown crops, food stalls and genuine 'hippy' paraphernalia.

You will however, need to jump in a car as there is no public transport to get you there. But the trip is well worth it. Come for the food and clothes, stay for the beautiful vibe and people.

Getting back to nature

The east of Melbourne is a beautiful place, with heaps of back-to-nature options for those so inclined.

Bonsai

If you need a way to wind down, or something inspirational to put some energy into, then bonsai shopping is a great idea!

The art of bonsai is a relaxing and rewarding way to make those slow hours tick by.

  • A World of Bonsai, situated in Blackburn, is a small and quaint little store with a variety of little plants to take home. They also stock an eclectic range of bonsai accessories and all the tools and equipment you may need.
  • Bonsai- The Imagination Tree is situated on Silvan road in Monbulk. You will also find A to Z Bonsai Starters on Silvan road, which caters for all bonsai lovers, from beginners to advanced.
  • Bonsai Australia, situated in Forest Hill, is a great place to find whatever kind of bonsai your heart desires.

All these wonderful shops, catering for all things miniature, can be found through the Yellow Pages.

Walking

If walking and sightseeing is more your thing, then why not go on a bush walk through some of Victoria's most beautiful landscapes?

The Shire of Yarra Ranges (new window) has great facilities and guides for those wanting to bike ride or hike around its luscious parks and ranges. Go for the fresh air and unwind with the many wine tours and flower shows they have on.

The Manningham City Council (new window) hosts one of the highest percentages of open space areas in a metropolitan area. They prioritise on the well-maintained gardens and reserves and have several rare native flora and fauna.

Flicks

If you want to catch a flick at a notably famous cinema, then the Rivoli (new window) is where you need to be. With Art Deco style architecture, the Rivoli showcases the latest movies hitting the box office as well as screening the latest in art house films.

They have discounted prices for groups and concessions for all you students out there.
