AFL Rookie Reporter Program
Applications for the 2016 AFL Youth Central Rookie Reporter program are now closed. Successful applicants will be notified in late January 2016.
The AFL Youth Central Rookie Reporter Program gives two young people the chance at a voluntary internship position with AFL Media.
The Rookie Reporter Program is a great opportunity to work alongside senior AFL reporters and editors to cover various aspects of the game for the AFL website, AFL App and AFL Record.
The internship is open to:
- Young Victorians studying journalism (or an equivalent course)
- Young Victorians who have a qualification in journalism (or an equivalent qualification)
The internship will run for six months from March 2016 through to the end of the 2016 football season. Each participant will work one day a week for 4 hours.
Interns will make invaluable contacts and tap into the knowledge and practical skills of experienced sports journalists and editors.
Established in 2012, the Youth Central AFL Rookie Reporter Program gives aspiring journalists an opportunity to learn from some of the best sports reporters and editors in the country.
All nine of the program's past graduates are now working in media, while five have found further employment with AFL Media.
Susan Giese, one of the 2014 Rookie Reporters, said the opportunity to work with the AFL Media Team had been a "huge eye opener".
"Being in the production room, watching it all unfold and getting a feel for how the whole team comes together is something I haven’t done before," Susan said. "It’s a good multiplatform news space and it’s great to be part of it."
To date seven rookie reporters have taken advantage of this amazing opportunity.
