Automotive tinting traineeship | Youth Central

Describe your average day.

I start work at 8.30am. When everyone has arrived, we chat with the boss and discuss what cars need to be tinted. My job is to help out and prepare the cars; I take the door trims off, pick up the scraps and clean up. I also do a bit of car detailing.

How did you find out about this traineeship?

I had applied for a mechanics apprenticeship through G Force and was unsuccessful, but they knew I was looking for a job and asked if I'd be interested in this traineeship when it came up.

Why did you leave high school when you did?

I left high school when I finished Year 11 and had completed a VCAL (Victorian Certificate in Applied Learning) in building. I didn't want to do Year 12. I'd had enough of school and wanted a full-time job, but I didn't know what I wanted to do. I knew school didn't interest me anymore but having a job, and working for money, did.

What did you want to do after high school?

When I was at school I thought I wanted to be a builder, but after completing my VCAL I realised building did not interest me. I didn't like working with wood. I've always been interested in cars, so I thought about doing something with cars.

Did you have any previous work experience?

I did laboring for a builder and a roof plumber while at school and on the weekends. I also worked part-time in a bottle shop serving customers.

What do you like most about the traineeship?

I've always had an interest in cars, so this traineeship is great. I get to work on some really nice cars. I also like working with good people: they make coming to work fun. I also like just having a job and earning money.

What training is included in your traineeship?

I'll go to Trade School in Perth for two weeks - the company is sending me there. It's the only Trade School in Australia that does a course on tinting.

What skills do you need for the traineeship?

To become a car tinter you definitely need to be very patient, have a steady hand and eye for detail, because you can't afford to make mistakes.

What are your plans for the future?

I want to focus on what I'm doing now, finish my traineeship and continue working at Tint Master. I like what I'm doing and will keep doing it for a while.
