Seth Sentry | FReeZA Artist of the Month | Youth Central

When we last spoke with Seth Sentry (little over a year ago) his first album This Was Tomorrow had debuted at #6 on the ARIA charts, Channel [V] had named him Oz Artist Of The Year, and he'd just made history by becoming the first Australian hip hop artist to appear on a US talk show. What followed was a relentless tour schedule, of which amidst it all Seth has found the time to write and record his next album. You've probably already had a taste of what's to come, with first single Run premiering on triple j's airwaves towards the end of last year. It's Seth at his best, characteristically nostalgic, poignant and humorous. As he gears up to take the Run tour onto the road later this month, we caught up for a quick chat.

Hi Seth Sentry, with the success of This Was Tomorrow, have you been feeling the pressure to follow up with this second album?

Nah not really, you can't really think about that sort of stuff, you've just got to make music that you want to hear.

What can you tell us about your upcoming album? Will there be more nods to your early years (like Run)?

I think it's similar to Run sonically, a lot more confident and technical (raps wise) than This Was Tomorrow. I really just wanted to rap way gooder on this album. Plus Styalz Fuego (Float Away, Vacation) is handling all of the production this time round.

A couple of weeks ago you treated us to a crazy performance at triple j's Beat The Drum concert sharing the stage with Hilltop Hoods, Illy, Drapht, Horrorshow... what was it like being onstage in that moment?

It was fun but to be honest I don't even really remember doing my verse. It normally takes a while to climatise when you're on stage in front of a huge crowd and because we didn't get that time, it's all a bit of a blur really. Though I do remember being hit with a pair of sunglasses which I spent the rest of the song wearing. They looked pretty shit apparently.

Did you have the chance to catch the rest of the Beat The Drum concert? What was it like backstage?

Just a bunch of mates drinking the bottles of rum we snuck in. It's always good to hang with my fellow rap friends.

You've spent a hell of a lot of time on tour, what are the best and worst things about touring?

I love touring way more that I'm single (no not for that reason) because I don't feel homesick anymore. I kinda just go with it. I love that I can think of lyric in my lounge room and then play it to hundreds of people around the country who sing it back at me with the same feeling and emotion I had when I first wrote it. The worst is not being able to find a decent cup of coffee.

The Run tour kicks off in just under a month, what are you most looking forward to on it?

I'm really fricken pumped, the old team's back together. I'm looking forward to doing a whole new show from the ground up. With a bunch of new songs and of course the friends Coin Banks and Citizen Kaye.

What do you get up to when you finally get some down time and aren't performing?

I have a whole range of leisure pursuits. Mainly playing video games.
