COVID-19 and young people | Youth Central

The coronavirus (COVID-19) situation is rapidly evolving, and the Victorian Government recognises that this is a challenging time for you, your family and your friends.

Young people across the world are in the same situation. Thank you for understanding how crucial your role is in preventing the spread of coronavirus.

Physical distancing and Victorian Government restrictions on gatherings

We know it’s hard, but your priority is to practice strict physical distancing so that you don’t contract the virus and pass it onto your family, friends and community.

All Victorians must follow the guidelines on physical distancing and restrictions to gatherings. Visit the Victorian Government’s coronavirus website for the most up-to-date information and advice.

If you do not follow these directions, you may face on-the-spot fines of $1,652 for individuals. Larger fines can also be issued through the courts.

Health and wellbeing

For some young people this crisis will be stressful, and for others there will be a sense of frustration that you must stay home or in your current accommodation, but it’s important we all do our part.

In terms of your physical health, the most important thing you can do is maintain physical distancing and basic hygiene, particularly frequently washing your hands with soap or using hand sanitiser.

Many young people will feel that by staying home you’re missing out, feeling disconnected or worried about the state of your friendships, or concerned about school and academic performance.

For your mental wellbeing, there are a number of things you can do:

  • Maintain a healthy diet, exercise and sleep regime.
  • Talk to loved ones about worries and concerns.
  • Engage in hobbies and enjoyable activities.
  • Be prepared – ensure you have enough food, supplies and medication on hand. Ask for help collecting these items where possible.
  • Avoid or reduce your use of alcohol and tobacco.

While it’s understandable that you may want to keep on top of the latest coronavirus news, it can also be overwhelming. Make sure you limit how much time you spend taking in news or social media content about the virus and look after yourself.
