When did you start writing songs and making music? How did you get into it?

I’ve been writing music ever since I was 12 years old. When I learnt how to write poems, I loved that they rhymed and eventually that turned into me writing little raps and choruses. I used to steal my brother’s iPod shuffle (the good old days) and listen to it every day and night and grab inspiration from all the different artists and genres. It ranged from folk music to hard gangster rap - it was good fun!

How would you describe your music?

I try not to confine myself to one genre. I love all types of music. I try and switch my sound up as much as I can. I love singing but was always afraid to use my voice so I just rapped instead, but now that I’m more comfortable with my voice and singing, I try to incorporate rap verses into my songs to change it up to show my diversity.

Where do you get the ideas for your songs and do you have a process for writing them?

Usually I focus my song-writing on truth and love. I get the ideas for my songs about things that are happening to me and around me. I usually write my strongest lyrics when I have a strong emotion or feeling that sparks inspiration. I normally hum melodies into my voice memos or say words/lyrics that I like and elaborate from there. At any moment something inspires me I have to note it down - the amount of times I’ve had toilet breaks at work to write an idea or record it on my phone is crazy. (Let’s hope my boss doesn’t see this)

What kind of things do you like to write about?

I usually write about heartbreak, struggles I’m going through, love and healing myself. I’ve found the lyrics I write really fit well with my own journey and whatever is happening to me at the time. It’s nice looking back on old songs and seeing how far I’ve come in life and how much I’ve grown.

Who has had the biggest influence on your music?

The biggest influence on my music? I had to think hard about this. I would have to say my older brother and the music he listened to. I mean, without him I wouldn’t have ever listened to the music I did and learnt about different flows and sounds. Also my relationships and down times in life. Letting go of the times I was hurting by writing lyrics has been my saviour. Also writing about the love and happy times I‘ve had has always been great for me to reflect on and remember! Maybe life has just had the biggest influence on my music.

What do you like to do in your downtime when you’re not making music?

When I’m not doing music, I spend time with the people I love. Or I find myself cooking some pretty rad dishes and searching for the best new flavours of ice-cream. Other than that, I try to surround myself with good people and work on myself!

If you were to collaborate/perform with any artist, who would it be and why?

Right now, Billie Eilish is my biggest inspiration and I am just fascinated by her as a person. To work with her would definitely be a dream come true. I love that she is relatively new in the music scene but has already made a huge name for herself – and from what I gather, she seems to stay very true to herself and not care too much about what anyone else thinks. Her voice is beautiful and gentle and she knows her to work a melody – although she can let out some pretty badass vocals and lyrics and show her diversity throughout a song. Plus, her live performances are insane. I am in awe every time I watch a video of her performing live. I just love how real she is. I think if we worked together we could come up with some pretty cool music!

What are your plans for 2018?

I said to myself that 2018 is the year of music for me. I learnt so much last year from my single ‘Ocean’ and took a step back to learn as much as possible about the ins and outs of music and I’m ready to implement my knowledge into my music career now and really work hard towards my goal (with the help of some amazing people). You will be seeing a lot more of me performing live, plus more music.
